Collaborative Fieldwork in Environmental Science: Birdwatching at Fuente de Piedra Lagoon

Synergies Between Projects: Green ICT Detectives & ·D Academy

This initiative brought together students participating in the 3D Academy (Academy3d.eu) project, a program that shares many students with our Green ICT Detectives initiative. Because both projects focus on environmental inquiry, scientific research, and digital investigation, this overlap allowed for deep international collaboration between the teaching teams and student groups across all partner schools.

Fieldwork & Scientific Competition at Fuente de Piedra (May 2026)

Exploring and preserving biodiversity is a fundamental step toward building global environmental awareness. Building on our strong international partnership, IES Playamar joined forces with Mendelova School (Czech Republic), and ZST Nowy Targ (Poland) to carry out an engaging joint educational activity designed to connect classroom learning with hands-on ecological observation.

In May 2026, students participated in a specialized field expedition to the Fuente de Piedra Lagoon Natural Reserve, one of Europe’s most significant wetlands and bird sanctuaries.

During the activity, students conducted real-time ornithological observation:

• Species Identification: Equipped with field guides and observational equipment, students learned to identify various resident and migratory bird species inhabiting the lagoon ecosystem.
• Birdwatching Challenge: To boost engagement and scientific precision, a friendly competition was organized to see which student teams could spot, count, and correctly identify the highest number of distinct species.

Fostering Interdisciplinary Learning and Global Eco-Citizenship

This field activity served as a practical application of the concepts explored in both English and French language classes, as well as environmental science sessions. By analyzing wildlife in a protected natural habitat, students from Spain, Martinique, the Czech Republic, and Poland deepened their understanding of biodiversity conservation, ecosystem health, and the importance of wetland protection.

The seamless collaboration between the 3D Academy and Green ICT Detectives projects highlights the value of European and international educational partnerships, equipping our students with the scientific, linguistic, and analytical skills needed to become active environmental stewards.
